Do something kind for a friend or stranger. Thank someone, smile or say hello. Give your time to a community group or help a neighbour.
Helping others can give you a sense of purpose and belonging, build friendships and make your community a better place.
Below are some suggested resources for volunteering options, but there might also be opportunities in your own community via local council or community pages.
Buddy Up Australia
Buddy Up Australia connects current and former serving military and first responders, and their immediate families to their communities through free membership to physical fitness, social activities and purposeful volunteering.
Whether you are still serving or are transitioning away from the emergency service workforce, Buddy Up Australia provides you with a continued sense of identity, connection and purpose. We’re here to help our community thrive and feel the support and inspiration of being part of our tribe.
Chapters are located across Australia, with the Victorian Chapters based in Melbourne and Geelong. Activities are diverse, ranging from relaxing bushwalks, coffee catch-ups, and yoga sessions, to more adventurous activities like fishing, tennis, kayaking and even equine therapy.
There is also a National Chapter which holds online activities for those not located near one of the city or regional Chapters, but since the end of the COVID 19 pandemic this Chapter has been fairly inactive. However, if you are interested in leading an online activity, please get in touch with the National Chapter at info@buddyupaustralia.org
Go Volunteer
Why Volunteer? Don’t just make a living – make a difference, as well. There is a great deal of satisfaction that comes from making a difference to people in your local community. Volunteering offers many other rewards too. You can learn new skills and gain valuable experience in a wide range of areas that may or may not be related to your paid work. It’s also a great way to meet new people who share your interests.
Disaster Relief Australia
Disaster Relief Australia unite the skills and experience of military veterans with first responders and civilian volunteers to aid disaster recovery operations around the world.
