Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics took to the field at the MCG on Sunday, for the AFL’s annual Emergency Services Match, hosted by the Hawthorn Football Club.
The clash between the Hawks and the Tigers marked the fifth edition of the special AFL game, which gives footy fans the chance to celebrate and learn more about Victoria’s first responders.
In front of tens of thousands of fans, AV representatives participated in a guard of honour as the players took to the field, a half-time lap of honour, as well as being part of a bit of pre-game fun to ensure the match ball was ‘healthy’ and on the field ready for the start of play.
Paramedics and members of the Ambulance Historical Society were part of the Fan Zone in Yarra Park, where they taught footy fans how to save a life through the three simple steps Call, Push, Shock and about the history of Victoria’s ambulance service.
AV paramedic Mike Ray was part of the guard of honour and said it was a privilege to be celebrated alongside his emergency services colleagues.
“An event like this recognises not just the people that were there, but all emergency service workers and volunteers across Victoria, the sacrifices they make and the impact they have on their communities,” he said.
“It was a privilege for my colleagues and I to go out on the field representing the thousands of paramedics, AV First Responders and our corporate staff, and to recognise the impact all of them have on being able to bring care to Victorians in an emergency.”
Mike said the only downside of the day was the Hawks getting the win, 131 to 68.
“It was great to be part of the guard of honour and see Hawthorn run out on to the field,” he said.
“But I go for Carlton and given the treatment Hawthorn gave Carlton last week, I had to barrack for Richmond!”
The Emergency Services Match also supported the Emergency Services Foundation, who focus on improving the mental health and wellbeing of Victoria’s emergency service personnel.
The match included representatives from Country Fire Authority, Fire Rescue Victoria, Life Saving Victoria, Victoria Police, Victoria State Emergency Service, Triple Zero Victoria, Forest Fire Management, Red Cross, St John Ambulance and VCC Emergencies Ministry.
