Make your property number visible

Clear and visible property numbers can save lives

By making sure your property number is clear and visible from the street, you are helping paramedics and emergency services find you faster.

Paramedics often respond to emergencies located on properties with inaccurate, unclear or missing property numbers.

Minutes count in life-threatening situations and if your property number is not clearly visible from the road, then it can make it challenging for paramedics to find you.

Property numbers can also help us locate emergencies that happen outside your home.

Properties including houses, apartment buildings, farms and commercial buildings should be clearly numbered so that they can be easily located by our crews or other emergency services.

Triple Zero (000) callers may use your property number to describe their location to the call taker and paramedics can get to the emergency scene sooner.

We want to get to you as quickly as possible and having your home clearly marked with a number makes a massive difference in our response and the patient’s outcome.

Making your property more identifiable

Take a walk or drive past your property to test the visibility of your property number – if you can’t see it, we can’t either.

Plants or trees that have grown to block the view of the property number should be trimmed or cut back.

Consider testing the visibility of your property number in daylight and at night by driving by your property in both directions.

Two letterboxes with one showing the property number hidden behind tall grasses and the other with the property number clearly visible after the grasses have been cleared.

Ideally, numbers should be reflective to ensure they can be seen both during the day and at night.

Those on farmland should make sure their home is not only visibly numbered, but also the direction from the main road is well-marked and signposted.

Whenever possible, send someone outside to wave the ambulance down and take first responders directly to the patient.
