Triple the cheers

January 23, 2025 | in Community News

For 20 years, the Nullawarre community has relied on the dedication and compassion of three remarkable women — Marcia Carter, Liz Steel, and Karen Couch — who have volunteered as part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

CERT is an ambulance volunteer program providing crucial first-responder support in less populated and remote areas of Victoria, where there is a low ambulance caseload and without an ambulance branch in close proximity to the town. Volunteers like Marcia, Liz, and Karen are often the first to arrive at emergencies, offering critical care and reassurance until paramedics can take over.

Their unwavering commitment has left a lasting impact on the lives of many, whether through life-saving medical interventions or a simple act of kindness during difficult times.

“It’s not just about treating injuries or illnesses, it’s also about being there for people during some of the hardest moments in their lives,” Liz said.

“I’ll always remember sitting with a patient over a cuppa after an emergency. It’s moments like that which remind me why we do this.”

Marcia’s decision to become a first responder came from a personal experience.

“About 20 years ago, I had a motorbike accident in this area, so I felt like this was the perfect way to give back,” she said.

Karen emphasised the importance of community support.

“The encouragement we’ve received over the years has been incredible. Knowing that we’re making a difference keeps us going,” she said.

Nullawarre Team Manager Tania Neville commended their extraordinary contributions.

“Marcia, Liz, and Karen are the heart and soul of our first responder team. Their care and commitment to the people of Nullawarre is something special,” she said.

In their two decades of service, the trio has witnessed remarkable changes, from advancements in first response equipment and medications to countless unforgettable moments.

Through it all, their mission has remained the same: to be there when their community needs them most.

Looking to the future, the team is as motivated as ever.

“We hope to continue supporting and encouraging the new and younger members of our team. It’s a privilege to help them learn and strengthen our community,” Liz said.
