Why become a first responder?
You will be helping people at a time of great need and making a difference to their life and health outcomes. Becoming a first responder offers many personal benefits and opportunities including:

What training is involved?
Ambulance community officers and community emergency response teams undergo training to earn a Certificate II in Medical Service First Response (HLT21020). The training includes:
- Driver training.
- Online learning.
- Face-to-face workshops.
- Supervised practise during workplace experience.
To maintain an Authority to Practice, AV provides ongoing education and support for all first responders including:
- Vocational education and training.
- Statewide conferences to maintain first responder networks and enhance skill development.
What is my commitment?
After your initial training, you will need to be available for at least 20 hours per month. Your team will use a roster to make sure there is continuous ambulance coverage for the community.
What support will I receive?
Responding to emergencies can expose first responders to traumatic and stressful situations. To support mental health and wellbeing, AV offers confidential services, including chaplaincy, psychologists, and peer support to all employees, volunteers, and their families.
Applying for a first responder position
Apply online. You will need to submit your current résumé including references.
Once submitted, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application. You will be contacted by the first responders team in due course via email to let you know the next steps.
Next steps can include:
- An interview.
- Medical and physical testing.
- Drug and alcohol testing.
You will also need to provide:
- Proof of Australian citizenship.
- Certified copy of your driving licence – Green P’s (P2).
- Certified copy of two other forms of ID, such as Medicare card or bank card.
- Certified copy of Working with Children’s Check.
- Immunisation record.
- Current police check.
- VicRoads driving history.
